For the first time in months, SPLAT was at full strength. Back together and SOL, imprisoned in a small compound in an undisclosed part of Tanoa. Having two pistols smuggled to us, we busted out of our cage and attacked the guards.

More came to assist, but we weren't drawn and performed a fighting retreat down a road. Capturing two civilian vehicles, we came upon a village where we were attacked. The group began to scatter, but we pulled ourselves together and regrouped at the church where Dan secured us a map. We were on a medium sized island in the archipelago's west.

Plancake led us toward our objective when we were set upon by an Ifrit MG. Dan missed our only RPG shot and it looked like certain doom. "Shoot the wheels!" cried Ivan, and we desperately peppered it with small arms fire. To our surprise the crew jumped out and were cut down, leaving us with a damaged vehicle.. next to our repair truck!

I took the wheel, Osea jumped in as gunner and we hunted down some scattered hostiles.
Dan then took the gun for our assault on the enemy's radio tower emplacement. We took it, but at heavy cost.
While the others engaged some hostiles coming from a nearby building, I began to hack the transmitter.

Success! Our boys knew of our plight and were sending an extraction, we just had to get to it. Unfortunately it was a long way away on another island!
Smoke launched AA at a hovering helo, but the pilot was on point and flared him away 3 times before beating a retreat.
Richard led us toward the coast and the hope of some boats, but just after entering this town we became bogged down with heavy fighting, and we only found a single two-man water scooter.
As the others held off the enemy forces, Richard and I sped along the coast looking for more boats.

We tried several places, to no avail.

The others found a seaworthy boat big enough for the team... at the town we'd just left! Richard and I came in hot, but the others became pinned down. I climbed a ladder and took down three hostiles but as SPLAT boarded the boat to freedom we were hit.

Ivan tried to revive me underwater, which worked, but he became stuck. While we tried to figure it out we became overrun.

Dan withdrew in the boat and successfully revived its occupants in shallow water, but soon afterward they were hit with a grenade.
Richard was left to go on alone. He rounded the northwestern edge of Tanoa and sped toward the EP, but was spotted by a patrol boat. He took evasive action but was hit with its opening burst and sank with our hopes.

_____________

SPLAT swung open the gate of our prison, a makeshift compound on a hillside in Tanoa. I went right, leading with a pistol we had scrounged. Rounding the corner, I saw only the gentle slope and distant trees.

Suddenly shots rang out. Dan had gone left and come under fire from our guards. We had hoped they would stay close to our prison, but they were at least thirty meters away, a difficult range for my small Rook pistol. Fortunately I was able to drop them, then a third behind the prison. I scavenged his AK as we armed ourselves, and we ran into the trees.

And ran.

And ran. The trees turned to thick jungle, darkened by an overhead canopy and dropping visibility. We picked our way around thick buttressed roots and fallen logs, as Plancake led us deeper in. Dan lagged behind with his MG, so I took one of his ammo belts to lighten the load.

Threading an impressive rock structure and making our way past the carcass of an abandoned truck, we crossed the mountain and made our way down into the valley on the other side. The trees began to clear and I heard an engine.

"A road, guys" I walked toward it, then froze as an enemy MRAP sped past and vanished around a corner. If it had spotted us we were sitting ducks!

To the right loomed the giant volcanic crater, locating us somewhere in the center of Tanoa's main island. Spotting the "golf ball" comms center atop it, we headed for it in the hope of securing transport.

We had reached the outside base of the crater wall when we took fire. It was a single enemy milita running down the side. We all hammered shots at him and he fell silent.

"Moving up" I reported.

"He won't be alone" Plancake cautioned.

His words were proven with .50 calibre certainity as a second armoured vehicle opened up. "Back to the trees!" I shouted, running like hell. Bullets hit the foliage in front of me as I zigzagged to the right. I threw myself behind a giant tree and heard heavy slugs smacking into it. The MRAP roared down the road and disappeared after the previous one.

SPLAT was with me in moments. Malchrntyne had been hit but was soon back on his feet. We skirted the right edge of the crater, pulling back further as soldiers probed the bush with gunfire.

We broke out of the trees to find ourselves on a rocky hill. To our left we could see two civilian trucks passing each other on the crater's side. Ahead of us a valley dropped into mist.

"That way" said Plancake. I stepped onto the road and was almost hit by another civilian truck that u-turned and sped off. We descended the mountain and crossed open ground into the valley. Dan struggled behind with the heavy MG.

After some time we spotted a small town in the distance. On its far side the sea stretched the horizon. Even at such a distance we could make out the figures of an enemy patrol walking along the road. Hopefully one held a map, our first step toward freedom.

We developed a plan. Dan had the most effective weapon, so he found an excellent overwatch position on a large rock. I handed my AK to Plancake and stayed behind to support Dan. Plancake, Malchrntyne and Osea moved toward the town, using the trees and buildings to cover their approach. I squinted at the town and called out enemy movements.

Shots rang out from the town as our assault team encountered the enemy. Dan squeezed the trigger to suppress them- and nothing happened!

"Can't fire! Can't fire!" he reported.

There was nothing for it but to move in and support our men at close range. I ran down the hill with my little Rook pistol, Dan on my heels. I threaded through some buildings trying to find the team when bullets tugged the air around me, coming from the right. I didn't stop to see who it was, I just threw myself into the nearest building. Dan was able to give me the hostile's position, and when I nervously peeked out the door I saw that my assailant was now looking for the others. I heatshotted him at long pistol range, ran to take his weapon, and almost blundered into an AT soldier behind a small tin hut! He also had been facing away from me, so I emptied the Rook's clip into him from a range of two meters.

I took his AA launcher and rifle, and found he had a map! I opened it up and found that we were at the northeastern edge of Tanoa's main island. To the east, the best part of a kilometer away, lay the marker of an enemy position.

I had just relayed this information to the team when we came under fire from the trees to the west. The enemy had started to close in. After a short exchange we regrouped and started to withdraw to the east. A drone appeared overhead, followed by a helo.

We encountered some soldiers in houses along the road, and had just cleared them when enemy soldiers began to arrive. A squad of three ran up the beach- I dropped two and lost the third behind a house. The enemy hemmed us in, giving them time to draw the net. I put a missile into the helo as it buzzed overhead, and it vanished over the trees.

We pushed toward the jungle, but this time it didn't help. Not only did soldiers find us, but mortar shells began to fall! Malchrntyne was hit by a blast, and I took a bullet. Plancake brought me around as Dan helped Christian, and Osea pushed the soldiers back. We fled into the trees.

Once free of our pursuit we stopped in a deserted village and took stock. The enemy position was over a hill and close to a village. We put it to a vote, determined that the village would offer the best approach, and moved toward the beach to find the village.

An airfield stretched along the coast. In a hangar we could see uniformed figures moving. We were running low on ammo, saw the opportunity to resupply for the base assault, and moved in. Fire hammered the windows, I tossed in a frag and followed it, Dan flanked to the east, and it was over in a matter of seconds.

We headed east along the waters edge, and had just gained the village when we encountered hostiles. This was a significant force, the enemy base. After some initial confusion we buddied up, and Malchrntyne and I moved to a flimsy house. He engaged the enemy, came under fire and relocated to beneath the house, but was hit. I revived him and we ran to a house across the street, where I was taken down on the porch. Malchrntyne dragged me inside and brought me around.

Fighting across the open ground proved difficult, and more soldiers started to appear from back the way we had come. They were following us. Dan and Plancake led an assault on the base via a deep gulley on its eastern side. Dan was hit as they approached. I threw smoke and tried to assist but caught a bullet too and fell beside him. Malchrntyne peeked over the top and was hit too.

"You and me, Osea" reported Plancake.

Osea, who had been back in the buildings, moved immediately to support. Plancake could then revive me, I brought Malchrntyne around as Plancake got Dan, and then we all went over the top together. We had successfully cleared the position, a mortar emplacement. We had been hoping for a communications center, and resolved to better decypher the enemy map symbols.

A vehicle stopped in the village. I consulted my map and saw it had gone red- a large force was upon us!

"Pull out!" we made no attempt to engage and returned to the gulley, following it south to the forest. Again the trees were our friend.

Now what? We had taken out the emplacement, equalling our previous escape attempts, but while we had eliminated the mortars that had hampered our progress we hadn't gained weaponry or communications. All other enemy camps were far away.

"There's a seaport not too far from here" offered Plancake. "Maybe we could get a truck there?"

"Or a boat!" I replied. Other bases were along the coast, faster to get to by water.

Now that we had a plan, we moved out. The seaport city was large, and we nervously crossed the open fields leading to it.

We drew fire as soon as we set foot within its limits, from a three-man patrol to the south. SPLAT knew the drill and didn't engage, staying on mission and pushing toward the seaport. We ran into another patrol- they had us hemmed in!

There was nothing for it but to charge. I shot one man suppressing us, then moved up and took out his partner who was more concerned with my colleagues. As the team moved up a civilian car rounded a building and stopped. I ran to get in the car but he pulled back and drove off. As Dan fired the car spun back toward us, missing me by inches and driving Dan into the wall!

I got him back on his feet. While the rest of the team swapped medikits I investigated the seaport. The news was good- two fast boats sat at the piers, enough to carry all of us. But by the time I could get back to report this, we had come under fire. Malchrntyne had been hit. Our every-present pursuers had found us.

Malchyrntyne could only limp slowly in the direction of the boats. The team stayed with him, but there was little they could do. Our medical supplies, like us, were exhausted.

Seeking more options, I spotted a civilian truck stopped by some construction cranes. I ran to it, persuaded the driver to lend it to me, and started her up. As I swung onto the road heading back toward Malchrntyne my blood ran cold- an enemy troop transport was at the far end of the street! I swerved to put a house in between us, gingerly eased it between a house and the pier's drop into the water, and reached Malchrntyne. As he wearily climbed in I saw enemy soldiers weaving through the shipping containers at the other end of the seaport. It was going to be close.

I carefully drove along the edge of the pier. The team had already scrambled into both powerboats. Malchrntyne and I fell into one, Dan fell into the water and swung aboard, Plancake gunned the engine and we sped out of the city flanked by Osea.

We made great time speeding south on the open sea. After such slow and painful progress we felt free, which lasted until we encoutered the four heavily armed enemy pursuit boats. Osea and I were both hit, but Plancake was able to outrun them and take us to one of the south islands. We disembarked near a base.

After some deliberation we assaulted at medium to long range. We gave a good account of ourselves, hitting three or four, but at half strength SPLAT was worn down and, finally, fell.

----

Malchrntyne and I crept up to a low wall and squinted at the roadblock. The patrolling guards lingered under some floodlights that washed out our NVGs. The land bridge they guarded was the only way west to the AA site and hostage VIP, our objectives.

"That attack boat to the west could be a problem. Maybe we should get Osea to line it up with a rocket before we assault the-" <BLAM!>

Gunfire cut the pre-dawn darkness. After a furious exchange Christian, Ivan and I cut down the roadblock guards and dealt with the gunboat. An Ifrit responded but was dispatched by a fine AT shot from Osea.

We advanced to the roadblock and swept it, and I liberated a PMCL rocket launcher as the rest of SPLAT joined us. Ivan moved up our Stomper UGV, and we headed along the beach to the wreckage of the attack boat.

Who swung their gun around, blew up the Stomper, peppered us like a bunch of n00bs and took me down with a volley of grenades.

After a hard lesson on the value of communication, SPLAT took out the boat gunners and advanced along the coast in a loose wedge formation, Aaron owning his role as a medic and keeping to the rear. Osea gained the attack boat guns and fired to the north.

We knew an HMG Ifrit defended the village ahead, and advanced with caution. I spotted it stopped at a bridge with one wheel over the edge (possibly having been driven there by Osea's fire) and supported by troops. I lifted the PMCL and got lucky, taking out both the vehicle and troops in a fireball.

SPLAT ran through a gully and assaulted the village beyond, meeting some fierce opposition until we were able to reach the buildings. We swept west toward a small military base, which inflicted casualties until it was overrun. The spoils were worth it, though. Aaron found a shiny new HMG Ifrit fuelled and ready to go.

From our new vantage point we could see across the valley to the town of Zaros. The hill to its south was sprinkled with patrols and topped with the cherry of an AA site, our first objective.

Dan, in his role as a scout, crept down along the beach to find us a way to the town. Osea scaled a tower. Christian, the only one with a marksman's rifle, engaged at long range. Ivan climbed into the Ifrit as Aaron's gunner and they took the more direct route, roaring across the valley and firing on enemy positions. This worked well, but from the hill I was on I could see them drawing more and more enemy fire. Knowing how this usually ended, I suggested they pull back and Aaron spun the vehicle around, gunning it back across the valley with fire on their heels. He reached us and swung the Ifrit behind a house, and a second later an AT rocket slammed into the building.

Having thinned the enemy, we advanced across the valley on foot. We'd reached a gully when the enemy kicked it up a notch. Several notches, in fact. We were notified that a column of tanks approached from the northeast!

Caught in the open like a roach on lino, SPLAT ran for some ruined buildings, the nearest cover. I readied my PMCL launcher, but the enemy were too smart to give me juicy targets. They roared offroad into thickets of bamboo, and their APCs disgorged troops in concealment.

Successfully drawn out, I swung to the east to try and get an angle on the armour, but it was no use. I had to move in closer, hiding when I saw troops looking my way, and continuing when they moved on. I was deep in bamboo when one of their troops found me. I fumbled for my assault rifle but he was on point and I was on the ground.

Teamwork saved the day; SPLAT had moved up together. Aaron was at my side in moments, but had no option to revive me. He and Ivan were able to KIA my assailant and bring me around, and we moved into Zaros together. The armour had seemingly disappeared, making our approach even more tense.

Aaron and I engaged a squad to the north, the others faced a patrol at the south end. Aaron and I took down all but one of the enemy, who hit me before Aaron got him.

A furious fight had erupted high on the hill as the main force of SPLAT assaulted the AA objective. Ivan and I pressed north, fighting up the main street to where it swung to the west. Peeking around a corner, we saw the imposing sight of our missing column of tanks. Ivan and I, however, were the right guys for the job: we were both carrying PMCL launchers.

Working like musketeers of old, we sent a volley of rockets down the street. While one stepped out and fired, the other stepped back and reloaded. Tanks erupted and smoke billowed, but one of the supporting troops hit Ivan. I dragged him to safety, but had used my last medikit.

I ran back to find a body and scrounge some medical supplies. When I got back Ivan was gone. The enemy chose that moment to counterattack in force. I took fire from everywhere, scrambled into a house and saw that the enemy was on all four sides. I was completely surrounded.

I tried to return fire through the windows, but couldn't even locate the hostiles. I attempted to break out and head south to join up with my squad, but took heavy fire as soon as I was in the open. I found myself outside flattened against the north wall of the house, unable to move without being a sitting duck.

With cinematic timing, the garden wall fell down and there was Aaron in the Ifrit. I threw myself in and he gunned it out of there with bullets drumming the hull. As we sped across a field to the east we drew the attention of a soldier, and my eyes widened as he lifted a long tube to his shoulder. Aaron moved the Ifrit inside the turning circle of the first rocket and I thought we'd also evaded the second, but there was a hollow bang and Aaron was thrown out. The Ifrit lost power and slid to a halt in a field.

I jumped out and ran for it, anticipating another rocket, but it didn't come. When I turned around Ivan was already on the scene and reviving Aaron. We'd taken damage, but we were out and safe.

"Now that", said Aaron, "is how you do an extraction".

The AT soldier had already been dealt with. We moved up to stop the counterattack. I hit one or two of the enemy, but was hit by another and had to respawn.

I found myself miles away with Dan, who had met a similar fate. After running along a road we found an abandoned hatchback. It was smooth and comfortable, and as we travelled I drifted off to sleep (afk).

When I woke up I was alone. The hatchback had been nicely parked in a garage, and when I climbed out I found that I had returned to the part of Zaros I had left, where we had engaged the counterattack. It was now quiet, and we had moved on.

I found the rest of SPLAT in the main street near the football field, the rough location of our hostage VIP. SPLAT had commandeered a tank, driven by Aaron, and the squad moved systematically through the buildings. Sweeping, clearing and marking each building, we searched for the VIP.

The enemy fought back hard with the arrival of new troops, the toughest yet. Under fire from multiple directions, SPLAT pulled together near the church. By laying down smoke and covering each other as we revived, we were able to fight our way clear. I burst into a house to find the VIP with two hostiles. I winged one before being cut down.

Dan cleared the room and revived me, and the VIP joined us. Our task was now to "Get Evac", accompanied by some garbled information that told us we were supposed to get a helicopter and fly it 7km south to a ship. The intel, however, told us nothing about where or how we were supposed to do this.

I had an option to call in a helo, but it was only reserved for CAS. It hassled the last tank as the VIP bellied after us to the football field.

Ivan hunted down the tank and blew it up while the rest of us wandered around looking for a helo. There was no sign of one, nor a helipad or airport. While this pointless and frustrating exercise continued, the VIP wandered off and encountered a wayward tank crewman who shot him.

SPLAT acquitted itself honourably, but Mission Failed. Mission designer failed.

LIBERATION

Liberation looked like it was over before it began, when the chopper refused to listen to us and take off. I'd heard about rivalry between the forces before, but here it was in all its ugliness.

I was all for a restart, but Plancake spurred us on to never say die and leg it. We humped our gear the 2km to the city, RVed at the MRAPs, and the guys drove and grenaded a path while I followed on foot and got shot a lot.

We stuck together and stuck to the plan. Once at the soccer field we hit the beach- literally, in Ivan's case. He sped his MRAP into the water, and that was the moment when those Duke boys knew they was in a heap 'o trouble.

Fortunately we had a .50 cal pickup close to hand, and pressed the attack on the castle. Rich took his MRAP right up the steps, into the castle and Christian peppered insurgents with grenades until he ran dry. We cleared the castle, blew up the bomb crate, then realised that two "possible bomb location"s didn't mean two possible locations of a bomb, it meant two locations of TWO bombs, and we had to get back to the soccer field as the enemy forces started to swarm and converge on the castle!

Malchrntyne and I headed to the front gate and did sniper/spotter. Which ended up being sniper/medic- I'd stay out of sight and drag him to safety when they found the range. Aaron was everywhere at once reviving, and when it was clear enough Rich, Ivan and I made a run for it back to the soccer field in the MRAP.
We were pinned down and things looked quite nasty at one point before Ivan hit the crate with a rocket and we ran for it again. Christian and I cleared the evac, and as fast movers barrel-rolled triumphantly over the city, our chopper swept in to extract us.

And didn't land. Screw those guys.

DON'T LET THE BUG OUT.

We tried the plan, but it failed. SPLAT covered the tower while I tried to creep down and hit the pilot, but the sandbagged wall protected him. I moved to get around the wall, the tower saw me and I was cut down (and avenged moments later).

We switched tack. I hit the guys guarding the truck, Ivan blew up the three armoured cars patrolling the installation, then we piled into the truck and I floored it. Smashing through the gates at the dock, we followed Rich's plan and swung wide to approach from the north. I flattened a few bushes, swung our war wagon onto another road and sped south toward the installation. A large warehouse provided the opportunity to approach from cover, and SPLAT reached it unseen. We took up positions and began hitting the installation's guard towers.

At last it was quiet. Too quiet. I suggested we send one buddy team to sound it out, and volunteered with Plancake. After crossing a dry creek bed we fell into their little trap, led by a large patrol to the west. I hit the dirt and fired through the grass at anything that gave off heat. The last guy and I stared each other down firing, and I was relieved when he fell.

I ran for the wall, too confident, and fell into their overlapping arcs. A hostile in the northeastern emplacement hit my exposed flank and dropped me, almost taking out Plancake too as they shot at each other. Plancake won, and Ivan brought me around.

SPLAT pressed the assault. Malcrntyne and Smoke took the north entrance and the rest of us the northeastern. We fought our way to a large building. I doorkicked and came under an intense spray of fire that made me stumble back out the door. Plancake came in hammering with the SAW, and we cleared the room.

By this time the others had cleared the northwestern side of the installation, and we all converged on the dome that held the bioweapon. A couple of sneaky hostiles gave us some trouble, but we cleared it out and Plancake sent a rocket into the germ crate.

The others had rescued the weapons designer, and with some clumsy maneuvering and repelling a last-send counterattack, we reached the extraction point and lifted off, mission won!

---

The calm, glassy ocean glittered as it reflected the lighthouse on the eastern tip of Stratis. Our inflatable boats cut through the night toward the enemy held island. Out there in the pre-dawn darkness were three AA emplacements that would make mincemeat of our invading force.

BLUEFOR needed the best.
Unfortunately they were in Somalia, so they sent us instead.

Coasting in to the beach, we climbed a hill and RVed with some local partisans. They offered us some supplies and a tip-off about some intel, but were too timid to aid us in our assault.

Stealthily, we moved up to the lighthouse. A complex sprawled before us, ringed by patrols and towers. Several men were playing cards around a table near a campfire, and beside them loomed a hulking Tigris, our first objective. Closer to the lighthouse, a contingent of enemy camped beside a house. Inside, according to the partisans, was valuable intel.

SPLAT took up positions. Plancake, Berklesnort and Powderman moved to overlook the intel base. Malchrntyne and Ivan drew beads on the enemy snipers at the main complex, and I readied my MRPL rocket launcher. Everyone sounded off when ready and awaited my rocket, the signal to fire.

I aimed for the top of the AA's turret, and let fly. There was a chatter of fire, and soldiers dropped like dominoes while the ordinance was still in the air. The MRPL punched through the enemy armour, and our first objective erupted.

Malchrntyne and Ivan picked off the enemy fighters and sentries. Plancake's group moved into the camp firing, Powderman breaking toward the main complex as Plancake doorkicked the house and found a laptop. A quick download, and we had the locations of all 3 AA and enemy strongholds on the island.

Switching to my Mk18, I ran down the hill to join Powderman. Our assault of the complex was ragged and undisciplined, but effective. In moments we had cleared the compound and found three striker vehicles. Berklesnort, our repair specialist, soon had them combat ready.

Saddling up, SPLAT's convoy headed up the mountains to the west. A radio tower winked in the distance, and we saw an opportunity to disrupt enemy communications.

Leaving our vehicles hidden in a gulley, we approached the hill. A two-man patrol along the road was easily KIAed, then we moved to the tower.

A group of soldiers ringed a campfire, and they hadn't heard us take down the patrol. We assumed firing positions, designated targets, and there was a short firefight as we took them out.

To the north we could see the second AA Tigris near two buildings and a campfire. Beyond it, in the distance, was the lights of Camp Rogain. We cleared the area, and Plancake laid a satchel at the radio tower base. He thumbed the switch, and enemy soldiers all over Stratis lost Facebook.

To the west, an Ifrit armoured car sat parked next to a four man roadblock. If we were stealthy enough and had good enough aim, there was a chance we could take them out before they could reach the vehicle.

We were, and we had.

So far, things had all gone SPLAT's way. That changed in short order when an enemy armoured patrol approached from the south. SPLAT scattered into cover. I found a position where the embankment was steep and they wouldn't see me until it was too late, and readied my launcher.

An MRAP with a HMG idled into view.

I punched a rocket through it at close range.

My elation was short lived. A T-100 tank had been right behind it, and its turret swing toward me. I ran for the lip of the hill and safety, but heavy machine gun slugs cut me down.

While I lay screaming, SPLAT fought back. Ivan took out the tank's track with an AT shot, and its crew bailed out into a hail of fire from my comrades. Malchrntyne brought me around, and Berklesnort set to work on the tank with his toolbox. Soon we had a combat-capable T-100 at our command.

We consolidated our arsenal, preparing for the attack on the second objective. Suddenly, in the distance, we heard the ominous rotors of a helicopter gunship.

Operation Hammerfall (mission 1 part 2)

Continuing from Part 1

The chopper prowled the skies above us. We stayed out of our vehicles, not wanting to risk the wrath of its rockets. Plancake had a launcher with just one AA shot, our only answer to it. The chopper came over the top of us, and he saw his moment.

The rocket detonated ten metres behind the helo, right over my head. Hit by the shockwave and shrapnel, the chopper started to fall. Its pilot autorotated and steered for the flat area to the west of the radio towers, and we ran toward it.

The pilot brought the helo down roughly in a gulley. He was hit by fire on exit. His crewman ran into the scrub, and winged one of us before I got him. The chopper, damaged and without fuel, was ours.

Having taken out their air cover, it was time to assault the second AA position. Malchrntyne and Berklesnort took overwatch, Plancake ordered (AI) Ivan into position with his AT, and Powderman and I used a gulley to approach the objective unseen. Moving from rock to rock, we reached the back of the smaller building undetected. Plancake counted us down, and SPLAT attacked.

Powderman and I sprang around the corner. Before we could fire on the men around the campfire they collapsed and the AA tank exploded. Plancake, Berklesnort and Malchrntyne had done their work well.

Powderman and I turned our attention to the buildings, checking the smaller one then doorkicking the larger from two directions. The house held three prone soldiers who fought back hard, hitting Powderman as he took a couple of them out. I mopped up and brought him around.

As we exited the building, an enemy patrol came down the road to investigate. I heard their bullets tug the air around my ears as I threw myself back through the door. Our boys on the hill, however, were still on the ball and took them down.

We readjusted our gear (Powderman grabbed a scope and I liberated an RPG launcher), and we turned our attention to Camp Rogain. It was a formidable emplacement, bristling with soldiers, AT and armour. Malchyrntyne, our marksman, thinned out a couple of their troops at long range but this drew attention. BIG attention. A tank roared out of the base, coming our way.

It was moving fast, but stopped at a large rock coming down the hill and I saw my chance. I launched an RPG across the valley, trying to allow for the drop. I got lucky, hitting the rock and washing fire over the tank. As it spun to move around the rock my second shot scored a direct hit.

Morale and adrenalin surging, SPLAT charged Rogain with Powderman leading. I reached the entrance of the camp and was firing on one of the four soldiers atop a building when he shot me. By the time one of my squadmates had brought me around, we were mopping up. Rogain was ours!

Driving a truck back to the radio towers, we assembled the strikers and other vehicles we'd commandeered for our attack on "the golf ball", the helo base to the south.

We moved in convoy, stopping just short of their grenade launchers' range. Previous attacks from the northeast and west had proved unsuccessful, so we crept through the forest to a small rise to the base's southeast, and attacked from there.

Eliminating their tower lookouts and snipers, we went to work on the main force. They fought back hard, however, and topped off the counterattack with armour. Two APCs drove us back, inflicting heavy casualties. Fortunately, while they hammered my teammates I had time to lift my RPG launcher again, and got them both.

SPLAT regained the initiative and pressed the attack, running into the compound and using the buildings as cover. I took out two shooters, burst into the HQ, secured the bottom floor and then found a sniper on the roof.

Some static guns gave us a small amount of trouble, and then the compound was ours.

Plancake and I then drove a refuelling truck back to the downed chopper. Once it was gassed up, we assessed our chances of getting it off the ground. It was at an awkward angle and among the trees, making a takeoff a guaranteed disaster.

Plancake, Powderman and Berklesnort, however, wouldn't give up. While Berklesnort repaired the helo, the others used trucks to bulldoze the trees and nudge it into a flatter position.

Nervously, I climbed into the pilot's seat and warmed up the engine. My teammates cleared to a safe distance as I hit the throttle, and with a scraping of leaves I was airborne!
[There was actually a bug whereby if the host dies inside a vehicle or static emplacement, they could not be revived or respawn, so I took some risk flying it]

I flew the helo back to the golf ball for rearming. Soon we had an arsenal of two attack choppers, a T-100 tank and some armoured vehicles, all prepped for our final assault.

--------------

Our insertion helo buzzed across the icy waters and through cold, gray dawn toward northern Altis. Somewhere ahead, in the morning mist, enemy troops were being briefed by a high value target (HVT). After two previous failed attempts, S.P.L.A.T had determined that the dawn would be their last.

We were inserted near a small forward outpost, from which we geared up.

Setting out in two 4WDs with .50 cals, we didn't have far to go before we were spotted by an enemy patrol. I jumped out to engage but Malchrntyne peppered their car and took them out:

The roads were heavily patrolled. Another car charged us soon after, spitting fire. Ivan hit back:

We stopped on a hilltop with a good field of fire, and were able to take out a third patrol. Moving southwest, we got eyes on the enemy's AA emplacement. It was heavily fortified:

I picked off a few sentries and we closed in for a fierce battle. It culminated in Plancake taking out the AA with a close-range AT shot, and we mopped up.

Having opened the way for our flyboys to back us up, we turned our attention to a town suspected of harboring our HVT. We dubbed the town "Gelato".

As Berklesnort and Malchrntyne began to snipe at the troops in the town, Ivan roared into the AA emplacement in an Ifrit he'd liberated.

I jumped into the gunner's seat, and we jostled down the hill to give OPFOR what for.

Between the snipers and the armour roaming the streets, we soon routed the enemy and cleared the town. A solid victory, but when we'd doorkicked the buildings there was no sign of our HVT.

I commandeered a nice civilian car and proceeded to the second town. However I sped ahead of our convoy, rounded a turn and ran smack into two gun emplacements. I was hammered out of my car and onto the road, and lay there as my comrades flanked and eliminated the threat.

We proceeded to the next town. I took out a sentry, but when the fighting got fierce in the center of town SPLAT withdrew to a safe distance as I called in an airstrike. The fast mover streaked in from the north...

...and proceeded to sprinkle his payload over the empty hills to the south of the town.

Oh well, look like we had to do things the old fashioned way.
We moved into town firing, calling out targets and doorkicking in pairs. Things went well until Plancake and I entered a main street and were cut down by a fierce squad with an MG. Berklesnort and Malcrntyne thinned them out but were cut down too, and at last there was only Ivan. The mission hung in the balance, but he was able to take out the MG and revive us.
Some more doorkicking, and I found what looked like our HVT skulking in a back room. Unfortunately he turned out to merely be an officer. He met the same fate anyway:

We were now certain he was in Syrta, sorta. We attempted the direct route there but ran into an ambush. Fighting them off, we resolved to go back through Gelato. I found a very nice car, and Berklesnort put on some Dexys Midnight Runners as we drove there in air conditioned comfort.

Ivan sped past us and ran into two patrols. I was forced to tarnish my beautiful car by ramming into an OPFOR soldier that threatened him, and we dismounted to join Plancake.

Ivan and Malchrntyne captured another Ifrit, moved to enter Syrta and were blown up by three emplacements lining the road. Plancake spun his car off the road and we took shelter from the bulletstorm behind a house. There were a buttload of enemy up there, and our boys were bleeding out.

Time to call the flyboys in again, and see if they could redeem themselves after the previous letdown.
The big boy swooped in with some laser-guided bombs....

...and was promptly blasted out of the sky. Man, those OPFOR were good.

Once again, it fell to the ground pounders. Plancake, Berklesnort and I edged along walls, threw frags and fought back. Time was running out, so I gambled on a charge. I went past the first emplacement, hit the second and reached the prone figures of Ivan and Malchrntyne. I spotted a soldier behind some sandbags, and we hit each other.

Time ticked away for Ivan and Malchrntyne. Plancake ran to me, shot my assailant, and revived both of them with 7 seconds to spare.

Regrouping, SPLAT entered Syrta. An intense house-to-house battle began, eventually forming a front along the town's main east-west road. We stuck together, calling out directions and angles and coming to each others aid. We were pinned down, we flanked, we chased down stragglers, and inflicted heavy losses, but the HVT eluded us.

We divided into teams and kicked in doors, marking the off on the map as we went. It looked like the rat had slipped through our net.

I stopped and thought. Where had the fiercest fighting been? On a hunch I went back to the east-west road, went through a body-strewn building and atop some stairs I found an unopened door. I burst in, shot his personal guard, and there he was.

Extreme prejudice took over.

We now had to haul butt to the extraction point. We found a chopper, but it turned out to have bingo fuel. Driving cross country, we reached the EP.

Clambering onto our helo, we lifted from Altis to fight another day. A day our HVT would not see, as promised.
